Not only in Pakistan but globally solar power is breaking records; every third power plant unit installed in 2020 came from solar, confirming its dominance among all newly installed power generation technologies, reaching a 39% global share. The global solar power sector added 260 GW in 2020 during the COVID period (IRENA). The current growth rate is 18% whereas the anticipated growth in 2022 is 25%. The global installed capacity for solar power will be increased by 203 GW in 2022 and by the end of 2025 it will reach 2.1 TW.

Current Global Solar Scenario

Pakistan’s estimated solar potential is 100,000 MW. The country has an installed capacity of 1,329MW in 2019, whereas other Southeast Asian countries like Thailand have doubled their capacity to reach 2,987MW and India has reached an installed capacity of 31,067MW during the same period. China is taking the lead in Solar PV World and has installed capacity of 205GW followed by USA and Japan having installed capacities of 76GW and 62.3GW respectively. In addition to installed operational capacity, 460 MW cumulative capacity is in the pipeline. Moreover, the 100 MW Solar Project of Zhenfa Pakistan is expected to be commissioned by December 2021. These fast-track development efforts of the global solar industry will definitely help in complying the Paris Agreement for limiting global warming to well below 2°C and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5°C
